On the peaceful tree lined street of Kolhapur, I am introduced to a sprightly young man with curious eyes and a quick smile- he asks me his age and I make many wrong guesses, staying within the 70’s- when he reveals he is 91, there is disbelief in the room. He is light on his feet, he paints for many hours everyday, recites MacBeth in an instance, sings Abba songs, drives around town…

Bunny & Jug Suraiya: Words, Wine & Travel

Sometimes a mesmerising interview comes along – I met Bunny and Jug yesterday and much after it was over, a cloud of forgotten words hung over me. Language can be a drug and one gets a good fix with them. Their travels through the world are filled with stories that keep you wanting more. They shared secrets of togetherness, growing old and bold with wise notes and humour…

Bunny edits a wine magazine – Sommelier, Jug writes two columns for Times of India that are like heirloom seeds- always sprouting perspectives with wit and humour… we feel JS nostalgia together (Junior Statesman was a magazine like no other)… Bunny gave Jug’s last page the name Rear Window and I as a teenager lapped it up. Both have found a wonderful life filled with books, travels (even as i write this Bunny is reporting la dolce vita from the skies)

Recently when Bunny wrote her novel – Calcutta exile – it was Jug who gave it the title.

That’s the way good partnerships work.

Self and Selfie: Raghu Rai

As legends go, Raghu Rai is relaxed, smiles a lot, has a penetrating gaze and really looks at you when he speaks. The first thing i noticed was his spine- straight and youthful. He is almost 75. The last time we had shot together was in 1986 and yesterday he looked the same. Just some new grey hair.

Watching him circle his work table, took me back to him bounding through Lodi Gardens on a misty January morning, 32 years ago – where he shared his passion for photography- every day of his life spent freezing the defining moments. The spring in his walk is the same, so is the light in the eyes.

He feels he lives far more deeply in the moment now than back then. I loved his reply to my first interview question- How much time do we have?

He smiled – As long as it takes.

Perfect.
